The island of La Graciosa shines more brightly than ever in the reflected glory of its patron saint, Nuestra Señora del Carmen (Our Lady of Carmen).

For yet another year, the island gets all dresses up to host its favourite celebration: the Fiestas del Carmen, which will fill Caleta de Sebo with life, music and crowds from the 6th to the 27th of July.

Come and celebrate with us!

Wednesday 16th July: the big day on La Graciosa

On Wednesday 16th July, La Graciosa will enjoy its most eagerly awaited day of the year. The whole island stops to honour its patron saint, Nuestra Señora del Carmen, protector of sailors and fishing people, on a day packed with emotion, tradition and faith.

Caleta de Sebo gets into the celebratory mood the week before the fiesta, putting on its glad rags and sharing a programme of music, activities and street parties that fill every corner with joy and reunions. But it is on the 16th of July that the islanders’ seafaring sentiment comes together to pay homage to the Virgen del Carmen.

The big day will begin with the Eucaristía de los Peregrinos (Pilgrims’ Mass) which is a solemn religious ceremony in honour of the Virgen del Carmen. Afterwards, the excitement moves to the sea with the traditional maritime procession, where the image of the patron saint is carried along the coast escorted by decorated boats. The day will continue with the blessing of the Virgin, the Ave María offering and traditional folk music by La Parranda El Lagar de Teseguite and the Agrupación Folclórica Altaja, putting the finishing touch to a celebration that brings together devotion, culture and seafaring tradition on a day that no one is likely to forget.

Tradition that sails with us

The Fiestas del Carmen are, above all, a tribute to our seafaring tradition. A moment that you must experience at least once to understand the devotion and the bond that unites the island people with the surrounding sea.
