Hello September! This month La Graciosa is hosting one of the most important events in the Canary Islands sporting calendar.
Have you ever considered taking on the 2.6 km race that has made history in the Canary Islands: the 29th El Río Swim Crossing 2025?
El Río 2025 is a unique challenge that connects Lanzarote and La Graciosa across the spectacular Chinijo Archipelago Marine Reserve, the largest in Spain.
Date and location of the El Río Swim Crossing 2025
The event takes place on Saturday, September 27, 2025.
The heart of the event is in Caleta de Sebo (La Graciosa), where all the swimmers gather for a group warm-up before boarding the boat to Bajo El Risco beach (Lanzarote), the official starting point.
At 12:30 p.m., the starting gun sounds marking the start of the adventure of swimming across “El Río”.
A historic crossing
The event was first held in 1993 with the participation of just 50 brave souls. Today, almost three decades later, it is one of the most popular open water swimming events in the Canary Islands, attracting national and international swimmers.
The crossing—2,600 meters of open water—not only requires physical endurance, but also excellent strategy to deal with the currents and the open sea. The time limit for finishing is one hour after the arrival of the first participant.
An incomparable natural setting
The route takes swimmers across the Chinijo Archipelago Marine Reserve, a protected area of enormous ecological value. Swimming here means swimming in crystal-clear waters, with the Risco de Famara as a backdrop and the volcanic silhouette of La Graciosa waiting at the finish line.
Enjoy it as a spectator
The El Río Swim Crossing is a celebration of passion for the sea, an event that inundates La Graciosa with energy and leaves behind unforgettable images every year. Whether you’re a swimmer or a spectator, participating is an opportunity to experience excitement at its finest.
