The Biodiversity of La Graciosa

La Graciosa is well known as an island paradise that is home to a natural wealth that distinguishes it enormously from the rest of the archipelago.

In this blog we want to tell you about the biodiversity of the island of La Graciosa, where fauna and flora coexist in a privileged space.

The fauna of La Graciosa

Although La Graciosa is a small island, it is home to very varied terrestrial fauna, with life flowing between volcanoes, beaches and land.

One of the most notable inhabitants of the island is the Canary wall gecko, a small nocturnal lizard that hides in small crevices in the earth.

La Graciosa is also a sanctuary for numerous birds that find shelter and nest along its coast and in its dunes. The houbara bustard is one of the island’s most iconic species, a majestic bird that is currently in danger of extinction. La Graciosa provides it with a home that is vital to its survival. Cory’s shearwater, famous for its long journeys between continents, also finds a place to rest and breed along La Graciosa’s coastline. It is also possible to spot the Kentish plover along the island’s beaches, its small, agile form easily blending in with the sand on the beaches. Lastly, another species worth mentioning is the stone-curlew, a bird with striking plumage and a characteristic low flight.

La Graciosa and its endemic flora

The flora of La Graciosa is a testimony to the island’s unique fragility. The most striking species on the island include:

  • Jopo de la Graciosa: This parasitic broomrape with its striking blue flowers adds a touch of colour to the island’s volcanic terrain.
  • Tarabaste: This plant in the allium family, a botanical jewel of the region, has a characteristic aroma and is found among the rocks and cliffs of La Graciosa.
  • Apteranthes burchardii: Known locally as colmillo perroor dog tooth, this succulent is a plant treasure that is well adapted to the arid island climate.
  • Downy sea lavender: This plant with hardy leaves and delicate flowers dots the landscape, bringing its unique charm to La Graciosa.
